Dist Minister Khader, confirms water rationing will continue in city

Mangaluru, May 01, 2019: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC)  will continue with water rationing in the city as per the existing timetable, that is stopping supply for 48 hours and ensuring water for 96 hours from May 1.

After inspecting Thumbe Vented Dam,  Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada U.T. Khader had said that water rationing will be taken up as a last resort as without rationing, storage at Thumbe will last till May 28 and if continued with rationing, it will be available till June 15. However, he had said that a decision on whether to continue with rationing.

Addressing media April 30,  Tuesday, the Minister said that water rationing would continue as the administration is not ready to take any risk. Though there is cloudy weather in the city and other parts of Dakshina Kannada, the catchment areas of the Netravathi have not received rainfall enough for assured inflow into Thumbe dam. Past rain records have shown that in some years, the district has received rainfall after June 15, he said.

Meanwhile, according to the rationing schedule announced by the corporation till May 21, there will be no water supply in the city from 6 a.m. on May 1 to 6 a.m. on May 3 (48 hours); from 6 a.m. on May 7 to 6 a.m. on May 9; from 6 a.m. on May 13 to 6 a.m. on May 15 and from 6 a.m. on May 19 to 6 a.m. on May 21.

Referring to the allegations made by D. Vedavyasa Kamath, MLA, Mangaluru City South, that the Congress leaders have not made sincere efforts to get funds from the government to pay compensation to land losers to store water up to 7 m high at Thumbe, the Minister said that MLA  Kamath has not discussed the matter with him even once.

“I am the Urban Development Minister. The MLA has not written to me in the matter. As MLA, he could have discussed the matter with me,” the Minister said and added that work on the new vented dam at Thumbe was completed by the Congress government.
