Detained Journalists from Kerala released after strong protests

Mangaluru, Dec 20, 2019: Malayalam Journalists detained by Mangaluru police released after strong protests. A team of eight journalists was handed over to Kerala Police at Thalappady on the Kerala-Karnataka border.

They were reporting from Mangalore Wenlock hospital, where the autopsy of two people allegedly shot dead by the police, were asked by top police officials on Friday morning not to report from there and later taken into custody.

Eight journalists of Malayalam television channels who came to report the protests in Mangaluru against CAA were detained by a police team led by Mangaluru city police commissioner. The eight were detained at 8.30 am was released at 3.30 pm, after seven hours.The mediapersons included Shabir Ummer, videographer Anish Kanhangad, Asianet reporter Mujib Rehman, cameraman, reporter Anand, cameraman Ranju and a News15 Kerala cameraman.

The police had seized their mobiles phones, camera, tripods and mike. The journalists said the police even barred them from talking to each other.


Mangaluru police handed over the journalists to Manjeshwar police in Talapady at around 3.30 pm after pressure mounted from Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, state director general of police Loknath Behra and several political leaders.

Journalists and several organizations throughout Kerala condemned the police action and protested on the streets.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had sent a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister V S Yeddyurappa demanding their release.
