Demolish compound walls on properties surrendered to MCC says Mayor

Mangaluru, July 5,2017: It has come to light from official reports that Mayor Kavita Sanil has instructed Mangaluru City Corporation officials to demolish compound walls built on the properties surrendered to the civic body through ‘dana patra’ (deed).

She has accorded a 10-day deadline for this.   The Opposition BJP had pointed out at the monthly meeting of the council here recently that even after surrendering their lands to the civic body, mainly for road widening, many property owners had built compound walls and were enjoying gains from it.

Now the Mayor instructed officials to take into possession the property immediately after obtaining the ‘dana patra’ from property owners. When some Councillors demanded that encroachments on the banks of rajakaluve and on ravakaluves be removed and shops built on the parking area in commercial buildings be removed, the Mayor shot back saying that the officials could go ahead if there was no interference from Councillors. Some pressed that illegal petty shops should be removed.

“If you and we all cooperate without interfering in the eviction process, it can be done,” she said.

The Mayor adjourned the House for some time when some councillors from both the ruling and the opposition parties created a fracas demanding that she give a ruling on evicting illegal roadside petty shops and shops built on parking places with a deadline.

Responding to it, the Mayor said there was no need for a ruling and the commissioner was empowered to remove them under the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976.

The Mayor questioned the intention of some councillors of pressing it now when the issue prevailed in the city for long.

She released a booklet on services offered by the corporation and the documents required to be submitted to avail services. It would be made available to people.

Soon after its release, Hemalatha Salian, a BJP councillor, raised objection over the fact that her photograph was not printed..

Another councillor objected to his phone number being printed wrongly. They demanded that the booklets be recalled.

The commissioner said that only some booklets for the purpose of release in the council had been printed now. The booklets meant for people will be printed with the corrections.
