Delegation to meet CM soon to seek compensation for farmers affected by Tumbay dam : Ivan

Bantwal, Apr 28, 2017: MLC and Chief Whip of State Legislative Council Ivan D’Souza has said that a delegation would be taken to the Chief Minister very soon to  seek release of  grants towards providing compensation to  farmers whose lands would be submerged due to the new vented dam at Tumbay.

 

Ivan was speaking to reporters after visiting the dam site on April 27, Thursday. He stated that as per the survey conducted by MCC, a  storage of water upto four meters height in the dam would lead to submersion of 49.93 acre land, while   storage of water upto  5 meters, six meters and seven meters would  lead  to submersion of 101.34 acres, 283.47 acres and 477.61 acres respectively. He also said he got the statistics by way of a reply to a question on Tumbay vented dam in the Legislative Council. He urged the government to immediately release funds to facilitate acquisition.

If water upto five  meters has been stored this year, the  water storage level will be raised to seven meters next year. The government has already released Rs 7 crores towards compensation, he added.

There is no dearth of funds to solve drinking water  problem, he said adding a grant of Rs 1.12 crore has been released to MCC for undertaking emergency works  to ensure regular water supply. He said 128 borewells in MCC limits are in good condition while those which are in bad shape will be repaired. He said  of the 579 vented dams in the district 439 are in good condition while 126 dams needed repair.

 Meanwhile, MCC Commissioner Mohammad Nazir has said that all farmers whose land has been submerged due to storage of water upto five meters in the dam are provided rent towards their land and  added that all those who are now fighting for compensation to farmers are not farmers.
