Defiant Sastan residents protest against toll despite ban orders; detained

Udupi, Feb 11, 2017 : The prohibitory orders under Section 144 clamped by the administration did not deter   the members of the general public from staging a protest at Sastan  on February 11, Saturday against toll collection without fulfilling the various demands.

Over 500 protestors commenced a protest march  upto the toll plaza  from near the Shiva Kripa auditorium but were intercepted near the bus stand by the police led by Udupi’s in-charge SP Vishnuvardhan. The protestors were subsequently detained.

 Later  an activist Rajesh Kaveri who spoke to media  pointed out  that the  meet chaired by the District in-charge Minister and held at the DC office on February 4 had decided  to  withhold the collection of toll at Hejamady and Gundmi. He also alleged that the DC was not evincing interesting in hearing the grievances of the protestors.

Though the minister had directed for a joint inspection of the NH works by the PWD and the NHAI and to submit the report in four days, the DC had ordered that the toll collection would begin from midnight on February 9. The demands of the locals against exempting local vehicles with KA20 registration  from paying toll, too has not been heeded to, he alleged.
