DK face rainfall deficit in August

Mangaluru, Aug 10, 2016: DK Dakshina Kannada district which saw a rainfall deficit by 23% in July, and seems set for a deficit in August too. The rainfall since past one week has not been encouraging and the cumulative rainfall in August month is 162mm till Aug 8,  Monday, which is 66mm less than what the district received last year during the same period. The average cumulative rainfall for the month is 856 mm, which means that the district has to get an average rainfall of at least 30mm per day to make up for the deficit.

Even taluks have received less rainfall compared to last year, which was perceived as worst for the district last year. While Belthangady taluk, which usually receives good rainfall, is short by 10mm this year at 231mm compared to last year’s rainfall of 243mm, other taluks have received much less. While Bantwal received 132mm (last year 226mm), Mangaluru received 102mm (last year 199mm).

Puttur taluk received 165mm (last year 257mm) and Sullia taluk received 179mm, which is 39mm less than what the taluk received last year at 218mm.

The district receives a total average rainfall of 3,912mm per year, with Belthangady and Puttur receiving highest rainfall at 4,509 mm and 4,017 mm.

Even the total rainfall from January to August this year has seen a dip this year. The district received 2,230 mm of rainfall last year.

This year it is 2,203 mm of rainfall, a deficit of 27mm. This rainfall is nowhere near the average rainfall the district receives in the first eight months which is 3,249 mm
