DK district June month rainfall deficit

Mangaluru, June 23,2017: The monsoon forecast of the IMD said the country would receive a normal rainfall this year, yet Dakshina Kannada district has witnessed 42% deficit rainfall in June month so far.


rainfallDK district received an average rainfall of 674mm from January to June, which is better than last year’s figures of 604mm. But it falls quite short of the average of 1,176mm normal rainfall the district receives from the beginning of the year till June.

Rainfall since the past one week has not been encouraging and the cumulative rainfall in June is 495mm till June 22, Thursday, which is 40mm less than what the district received last year during the same period. The average cumulative rainfall for the month is 942mm, which means that the district has to get an average rainfall of at least 55mm per day to make up for the deficit, which is a tall order.

As for Belthangady taluk, which receives good rainfall, is short by 40% compared to normal average for the June month at 549mm (average 977mm). While Bantwal received 481mm (average 990mm), Mangaluru received 567mm (average 980mm). Puttur taluk received 464mm (average 959mm) and Sullia taluk received 414mm, which is 389 mm less than what the taluk receives at 803mm.


The district receives a total average rainfall of 3,912 mm per year, with Belthangady and Puttur receiving highest rainfall at 4,509 mm and 4,017 mm.


IMD Bengaluru says that the off-shore trough is weak and monsoon will pick up in the next two to three days. "It’s a brief period of lull," according to IMD experts.


The five taluks of DK district received an average 12.3mm of rainfall for the last 24 hours.
