DK Working Journalists Union condemns murder of senior Journalist Gouri Lankesh

Mangaluru, Sep 06, 2017: Weighing in on the national outrage over the horrific death of senior journalist Gouri Lankesh, the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Union members and media personals gathered outside the DC Office to hand over a memorandum to the DC, K G Jagadeesh and express their shock and outrage over the brutal incident.

 

 

 

Mediapersons in Mangalore were deeply shaken bythe shooting of Gouri Lankesh, the editor of Gouri Lankesh Patrika. Senior correspondent of Udaya TV and Secretary of the DKWJU , Srinivas Nayak expressed his anguish over the death of a fellow journalist and in strong terms, condemned the act.

Taranath Kappikad, senior journalist said that Ms. Lankesh was a bold and firebrand journalist who was a model for all journalists in Karnataka. He referred to the similar deaths of Govind Pansare, Narendra Dabholkar and M M Kalburgi . He spoke of how Ms. Lankesh was a social activist who, through her paper, had fought injustices in society and had regularly voiced  her disgust for anti-secular elements.

Harish Rai, the former president of DKWJU said that it was not just journalist but the people of Karnataka who were shocked by the murder. He said that many journalists used to follow the Gouri lankesh patrika for its fearless and scathing writing and hard-hitting journalism and admired the way it fought anti-secular sentiments.

Later, a memorandum was submitted to the DC.

Throughout the day, across Mangalore, various organisations gathered to express their anger at the death of Gouri Lankesh, who, for years had exposed the activities of anti social and anti-secular groups. Her death has reverberated across the world and messages of condolence and solidarity have been pouring in for the scribe.

Gouri Lankesh was born in 1962 and was the daughter of the famous  poet and writer P Lankesh.  She took over the weekly kannada tabloid, Lankesh Patrike ,from her father and ran it  with absolutely no advertising money.   Her style of journalism was hard-hitting and highly critical. In the past, she had had many defamation cases slapped on her but she carried on regardless. She was just 55 when she was gunned down.
