DK, Udupi gear up for SSLC examinations

Mangaluru, Mar 15, 2018: As SSLC examinations draw near, teachers are spending more time with slow learners, while some NGOs are helping students with Mathematics and Science.


sslc 15 mar 1In DK, out of 32,786 students who will appear, 17,364 are boys and 15,422 are girls. There are 2,263 repeaters, 1,215 private students and 342 repeat private students. The exam begins on March 23.

The district improved its ranking from third to second in terms of overall pass percentage in the examination held last year.

“We just finished the State-level preparatory examination (on Saturday). I am happy with the preparation of students, more so, the slow learners. A range of activities are planned till March 21 and also during free days between the examination. We are hopeful of a good performance by our students this year,” said Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Dakshina Kannada Y. Shivaramaiah.

Among the challenges faced by the Education Department is preparing slow learners from the minority community, who are more in number in the Bantwal and Mangaluru South Educational blocks.

Like earlier years, the Block Education Officer, the Cluster Resource Person and Block Resource Person have contacted local religious leaders to allow students to take preparatory classes till 9 p.m. till March 21.

Bantwal Block Education Officer N. Shivaprakash said NGO Jamiyyatul Falah was holding sessions of subject experts in science and mathematics in Kalladka and Vitla to make it easy for students to understand some difficult concepts, formulas and calculations. Teachers were using modules prepared by the District Teachers’ Association for preparing slow learners.

Mangaluru South Block Education Officer M.P. Gnanesh said officials and local elected representatives were holding talks with students to build their confidence in facing the examination.

BEO  Shivaramaiah said three preparatory sessions by experts from the Mysuru-based State Institute for Rural Development held between January 17 and March 3 were helpful. Many students attended these interactive sessions made available through video conference facilities at 178 centres in the State.         

14,643 students in Udupi  :
Udupi DC  Priyanka Mary Francis said that the district administration is taking all measures for the smooth conduct of SSLC examinations which will begin from March 23 and end on April 6.

Speaking at a meeting held at the DC office on March 14, Wednesday, she said that as many as 14,643 students are writing the exam. Out of them, 7,650 are boys and 6,993 are girls.

There are 51 exam centres and all of them will have CCTVs installed. Police security has been ensured and basic infrastructural facilities like drinking water have been arranged. The DC instructed DDPI to ensure better facilities for students.

Inspectors will be appointed as well as custodians to accept the question papers. Two vigilance committees are formed. The area of 200 meters in and around each examination centres is declared as a prohibited area, she said and said observers are pressed into service for each examination centre.

She directed the Police Department officials to ensure security to all examination centres while transporting answers scripts and security rooms in various places to keep the evaluated answer scripts.

She instructed officials from the treasury to maintain the appropriate timing while delivering the question papers. She also insisted that CCTV cameras be put in security rooms of the treasury office.
