Mangaluru, May 03, 2016: Chairing the meet on bank security held at Syndicate Bank in Mangaluru,  DK SP  Sharanappa said the camera resolution of CCTV as well those embedded in ATMs were of poor quality which did not serve the purpose. The DK police concentrated more on cyber-crime during the meet.

Sharanappa DK District Police on May 2, Monday cautioned banks not to ignore their instructions on security and upgrade their security apparatus, especially CCTV cameras inside and outside banks/ ATMs to deter miscreants and also help them in detection in case of frauds or thefts.

DK SP  SD Sharanappa instructed police sub inspectors to visit the bank branches in their jurisdiction, check the functioning of CCTV and their resolution and submit a report. The banks have been told to upgrade CCTVs within by the begining of June.

He also said that other equipment like fire alarms or firefighting equipment should not be merely measures of tokenism but should work properly. SP Sharanappa said one of the reasons that cyber-crime was on the rise was due to banks failing to create awareness among the customers and suggested that account holders, especially new customers, should be counselled thoroughly on the do’s and don’ts of ATM cards - as it was seen that customers, more often than not, were willing to share card numbers and all related information with strangers.

SP Sharanappa also asked banks to make their online security robust and block merchant sites which conduct transactions only on the basis of card numbers.

RBI, Reserve Bank of India has asked the banks, including those in the district, to look into the reasons for the inflow of about Rs 1 lakh crore additional amount to the banks in Karnataka, during the quarterly ending on March, District Lead Bank Manager Raghava Yajamanya said.

“Generally, the amount availed by the customers from banks, comes back to the bank. But in Karnataka, the amount is significantly high, according to a notice issued by the RBI,” he stated at the meeting.

Representatives of ICICI Bank, Allahabad Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, IDBI, Indian Bank, Dhanalakshmi Bank, Kotak Maharastra, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Patiala, Tamilnadu Merchantile Bank and UCO Banks did not take part in the meeting.
