Operation borewell DK policeMangaluru, April 25, 2017: Close on the heels of yet another shocking incidence of an innocent child getting entrapped in an open borewell, DK District police have announced a crackdown on open borewells in the district.

Bhushan Gulabrao Borase, Superintendent Of Police, DK District has requested the public to inform police control room on number 94808 05300 by SMS, Whatsapp or phone call if they come of know of any open borewell that can pose risk to children.

The name of informer will be kept secret. Action will be taken to close the open borewell by approaching concerned authorities and by issuing notice to the owner, Mr. Borase has said in a media communiqué.

It may be recalled that there have been a spate of incidences across the country over the last decade where little children have fallen into abandoned borewells and lost their lives. The most recent was the tragic case of Kaveri, a 6-year old girl who fell into an open borewell at Jhunjarawadi village in Athani taluk of Belgaum district last Saturday.

Despite a 54-hour rescue effort by experts from various fields, the girl could not be saved and her lifeless body was recovered yesterday from 30 feet underground.

This event had evoked considerable outrage from the public over the apathy of the government machinery in addressing this avoidable tragedy. It is hoped that the present crackdown will result in capping of all the open borewells in the district.
