DK DC calls for systematic tackling of SW monsoon fury currently

Mangaluru, May 31, 2017: Karnataka government has released Rs 30 lakh grant to each of the five taluks in DK - Dakshina Kannadato help authorities meet the monsoon related exigency, noted DK DC Dr K G Jagadeesha.  Out of the grants, Rs 20 lakh will be used to compensate people affected by natural calamities, rest for urgent works. The administration will send a separate proposal to the government to allocate additional Rs 2 crore to meet natural calamity related exigencies in the district.

Chairing a preparatory meeting to chalk out strategies in view of impending South West monsoon, DK DC said coordination committees have been set up at taluk level headed by respective tahshildars to take stock of any monsoon related needs that needs to be met. The taluk administration has been directed to identify places prone to inundation, flooding and take steps in advance to meet the same. Swimmers, boats, crew to clear uprooted trees too must be in place, he said.


A 24x7 control room will function at the DK DCs office during monsoon and people in need may call 1077 in case of need. Likewise, similar control rooms will be set up at the taluk levels, he said. Authorities must ensure that there is no stagnation of water at under construction buildings, he said, while instructing them to also take due steps to prevent communicable and water borne diseases that are common with the onset of monsoon.

Authorities must have contingency plan ready for areas that have seen flooding in the last 20-years. People residing in such areas should be sensitized about taking necessary precautions. Mescom, department of forest, urban local bodies, gram panchayats, taluk panchayats and taluk offices must have their separate control rooms for people to call in. In case of heavy rains, tahshildars, EOs of TPs and BEOs will take a call on declaring holiday for schools if the situation really so demands.
