Mangaluru, Feb 05, 2018:  Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has said that  the  administration was thinking in terms of implementing ERP or Electronic Road Pricing System for private vehicles within the city limits  in order to ease traffic congestion and facilitate smooth pedestrian movement in the would-be Smart City of Mangaluru.

The DC  gave this information to reporters after raising the ERP issue at the RTA meeting held in his office earlier in the day.

Pointing out that the system is already in force in Singapore and other foreign nations, he said if introduced in Mangaluru it will be the first city in the country to have this facility.  ERP is an Electronic Road Pricing System used in managing road congestion. Based on a pay-as-you-use principle, motorists are charged when they use priced roads.

The Deputy Commissioner said a meeting would be held with elected representatives as well as MCC officials in this regard  and there are plans to implement it in phases after fixing rates for different routes. He also stated that  this move would reduce traffic congestion in roads that  are used mainly by pedestrians.

The DC pointed out that the new system  does not need any expenditure except development of software. He even stated that widening of roads to facilitate increasing traffic would only hit hard old buildings and monuments.
