They visited the kin of farmers in Belthangady, Kadaba and Puttur taluks. The officials consoled the families of the farmers.

Ibrahim said investigations revealed that the suicides are not on account of personal debts.

Noting that a report on the suicide deaths has already been submitted to the state government, B Sadashiva Prabhu, additional DC, in a press communique here, stated that at a district-level enforcement meeting of all bankers and cooperative institutions held on July 16, directions have been given to respective financial institutions to go slow on recovery of agricultural loans. No cases should be registered against farmers who fail to repay loans on a timely basis.

The district administration has already issued strict instructions to police to act against moneylenders and private financiers who charge more than the permissible rate of interests for loans under the provisions of the Karnataka Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act, 2004, Sadashiva Prabhu said.

Police will undertake quick investigations against those violating the law in this regard on receipt of complaints and take necessary legal steps.
