Cyanide Mohan held guilty of murder in 19th case

Mangaluru, Feb 12, 2020: The sixth additional district and sessions judge Sayeedunnisa held serial killer Cyanide Mohan (56), guilty in the murder of a woman from Kasargod on Tuesday. This is the 19th case where Mohan has been found guilty. The court will hear arguments on the sentence on Saturday as to Times of India reports.

Public prosecutor Jayarama Shetty told TOI that the victim had gone missing from her house on January 3, 2006. Aged about 23 then, she rolled beedies at a factory and had studied up to Class 10. At her relatives wedding, the convict introduced himself as Mohan Kumar, a teacher from Vittal. A week later, he visited her house and said that he was interested in marrying her, as they belonged to the same caste. Under the pretext of going to a temple, she left her house on January 3, 2006. They went from Puttur bus stand to Mysuru, and spent the night at a lodge in Mysuru. On his advice, she had worn gold ornaments. Like in all other cases, after having sex with the victim, on January 4, under the pretext of going for a puja, he took her to the KSRTC bus stand. He asked her to leave behind the jewellery that she was wearing at the hotel room, making her believe that it was the advice of a priest. At the KSRTC bus stand, he gave her a tablet laced with cyanide, stating it was a contraceptive pill, and asked her to consume the same in the toilet.

At 7am, on finding the woman lying on the ground, police constable Basavaraj from Lashkar police station, rushed her to the hospital where she was declared dead. An unnatural death case was registered. It was only after Mohan’s arrest in October 2009 the matter came to light. Her parents had filed a missing complaint case, and after Mohan was arrested, based on her father’s complaint, the Lashkar police converted the case of unnatural death report case into murder.

Mohan has been charged under IPC sections 366 (kidnapping), 417 (cheating), 376 (rape), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison), 392 (robbery), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence). The court has examined 48 witnesses and 70 documents.

Meanwhile, arguments in the 20th case will be heard on Saturday.
