Mangaluru-based Center for Health and Development (CHD Group), a registered humanitarian organization, has decided to set up a Regional Animal Welfare Hospital. This type of hospital does not exist in Mangaluru, Dakshina Kannada district or in the neighboring districts either.

CHD says they intend to build this hospital in a 7.5 cent land and the objective is to cater free service to stray animals and offer subsidized service for other pets. Veterinary specialists will perform the necessary day to day engagement while CHD Group will monitor the overall functioning.

The group has ventured to start an animal hospital which would be run on a sustainable revenue model after they secure crowd funding assistance from well-meaning donors. A spokesperson said this would be one of the verticals of CHD Group. The hospital would come up in Bajal, Padil in the outskirts of the city. Boarding facility will also be given for animals during owner’s absence.

The CHD Group after consultation with veterinary consultants across the country has come to this decision. The crowd funding appeal campaign is running on milaap.org.

"This would be a great tribute to animal lovers and animal welfare activists in the coastal region when functional in few months from now," the spokesperson said, adding Shashi Tharoor, former Under Secretary General of the United Nations and Member of Parliament, Thiruvananthapuram, has supported the cause on Twitter and Facebook as well.

"The entire coast lacks an animal care centre since it is not a profitable business. CHD Group respects the voiceless creatures of God’s design and therefore has thought of providing relief to animals in the most optimum manner," the spokesperson added
