The scheme automatically covers farmers who availed crop loans from banks. As it was voluntary for other farmers, they will have to apply through banks in which they have accounts. The last date for applying under the scheme is June 30.

WBCIS covers loss of crops due to vagaries of weather conditions. The insurance scheme will be implemented in all the hoblis except the ’Mangaluru A’ hobli in Dakshina Kannada.

The release said the government has appointed Tata AIG Insurance Company Ltd for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi as the insurance agent. The insured amount for arecanut is Rs 1,25,000 per hectare while for pepper, Rs 37,500 per hectare. The annual premium fixed for arecanut is Rs 12,500 and the insured farmer will have to pay his or her share of Rs 6,250. The remaining balance amount of Rs 6,250 will be borne by the central and the state government.

The annual premium for pepper is Rs 3,750, of which, the applicant will have to pay Rs 1,875. Each gram panchayat is attached to the nearest weather monitoring station for assessing weather condition. Depending on the report from these monitoring stations, the loss will be ascertained.

The details of the farmers should be uploaded online portal, samrakshane@nic.in

If the crop is damaged in the jurisdiction of a particular gram panchayat, then, individual farmers can claim insurance for crop loss. The insurance covers loss incurred by the farmers following heavy rainfall, heavy wind, cloud burst and other natural calamities. In case of crop loss, the insured farmers should inform the insurance agency within 48 hours of incurring loss in writing about the extent of loss. Later, the insurance agency, Revenue, Horticulture and Agriculture departments will finalise the loss. The insurance amount will be finalised within 45 days.

The farmers who have not availed loan from banks should furnish details of RTC, SB account, Aadhaar card, or any identity card issued by the government while applying for the scheme.
