Criminal elements must dread cops, not innocents : SHRC Chairperson Meera Saxena

Mangaluru, June17,2017 : Arresting anyone or  taking anyone into custody  for questioning without any prior notice by the police would be tantamount to human rights violation, said State Human Rights Commission Chairperson Meera Saksena.

She was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on "Human Rights, Gender Equality and Human Trafficking’’ for police personnel at the City Police Commissioner’s office here on June 19, Monday. The workshop was jointly organised by the State Human Rights Commission, Police Department, Global Concerns India and  Academy of Gandhian Studies, Justice and Care.

 

 

Continuing her speech, Saxena said  barging into  houses at night, arresting without notice, inflicting third degree treatment to force the arrested  reveal the truth are  not acceptable and would be human rights violation.   

 

"There have been occasions when criminal elements enter police stations fearlessly but not an innocent  subject to atrocity.  The unlawful elements should dread the police not innocents," she added.

 

 T R Suresh, City Police Commissioner, said the workshop aims at sensitizing the police on the various aspects pertaining to law.

Brinda Adige, Director of Global Concerns India, Vidya Dinker,human rights activist Vidya Dinker, DCP Hanumantharaya and others were present.
