Covid-19: DK completes ‘Clean’ week; Infant patient discharged

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, April 11, 2020: Swift and strict action by the District Administration has resulted in the district reaching its milestone ‘Clean’ week with no new cases of Covid-19 coming to light for the seventh day in a row.

Meanwhile, in a happy coincidence, the district’s only infant victim of the disease – a ten month old child – was reported completely cured and was duly discharged from the hospital. The infant’s mother and grandmother who were considered to the primary contacts were also discharged. They are never tested positive for the virus, it is reported. Health experts attributed this to their natural immunity.

Corona ward

The child is said to have contracted the infection during a family visit to Kasargod, which has turned in to a Covid-19 hotspot. The family which hails from Sajipanadu in Bantwal-taluk had been kept in isolation ever since the child had tested positive on March 25. The quarantine was extended to the entire village as a preventive measure and the District Administration undertook the responsibility to providing essential supplies.

The child, identified in official records as ‘P06’ had been admitted to a private hospital on March 20 with severe acute respiratory infection. Subsequently swab samples were collected from the child and sent for testing. After the infant responded well to treatment, mandatory tests were carried out on April 7 and 8, which confirmed that the child was free of the virus. The baby was discharged on Saturday.

In an official media release, the Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B. Rupesh said that so far 12 positive cases of Covid 19 had been identified along with 128 primary contacts and 593 secondary contacts. They in turn had contacted 30,663 people, deemed tertiary contacts spread across 6447 households. All of them are being monitored and considered as safe with no one developing any symptoms.
