Corporators on war path, apartments letting rainwater UGD

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, June 16,2017: It seems Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) turning a blind eye to clandestine connection of rain water to the city’s underground drainage (UGD) network rather than open drains?  Corporators are on a collision course. Their concerns does not find place with the town planning section of the civic body which feels it is not possible to do so. Differing from these authorities is a city engineer, who asserts this is going on rampantly.

The issue figured in the monthly meeting of the MCC with corporators Appi and Rajesh Konchady drawing attention of mayor Kavitha Sanil to this issue. Both rue the fact that the mayor misunderstood the concern flagged by them and felt that ills seen in the city’s overstrained UGD network is due to lack of STPs in residential flats that are mandated to have one.

They are reported to have said that few large residential and commercial complexes in their respective wards are pumping water in the basement of their buildings and letting it directly into UGD manholes. "This is causing manholes to overflow and sewage mixed water is entering many houses in low lying areas in Jeppu Bappal, Majila and Kudupadi," Appi said.

Rajesh too points that a prominent educational institution in his ward is resorting to this practice.

A city engineer in the know of things on condition of anonymity said, "This (connecting rain water to UGD network) is easily possible. Lack of preventive and curative measures emboldens stakeholders to do so," the engineer says. The issue can be solved if the city corporation holds site engineers responsible for the same.

Refuting the same, a senior official in the town planning department stated that the issue raised by the corporators has not come to their notice.
