Udupi, June 18, 2015 : Manipal police led by Sub-Inspector S Nagesh Mestha have arrested seven persons on the charges of smuggling red sanders in three vehicles on June 17 Wednesday at Perampally. Red sanders valued at Rs 28 lakhs and weighing 575 kg was seized from them. The total value of the seized goods including three vehicles and eight mobile phones is estimated at Rs 20.20 lakhs.
The police who acted on a tip off had first intercepted a Kerala registration pick-up vehicle which they found was loaded with red sanders.
An Innova car which was following the pick-up was stopped and in this vehicle the red sanders were hidden under the seat. Even a Ritz car which was following was intercepted.
Though the driver of the car tried to escape, the cops trapped all of them.
The consignment was being transported to Manipal from Kerala and the accused revealed that they had to hand it over to Austin, Nelson and Sachin Shetty of Manipal.
Investigations are underway.
