Contributions of missionaries to Kannada literature hailed

Mangaluru, Dec 18, 2014: It were the Roman Catholic and Protestant Missionaries who provided a strong base for education in the region by opening schools and making education accessible to the common man, said  Meenakshi Ramachnadra, Head of the Department of Kannada of Besant Women’s College.

 

 

 

 

 

She was delivering the AR D’Souza Endowment Lecture on Contributions of Christians to Kannada literature,’ at a function held at the St Agnes College in the city on December 17, Wednesday under the auspices of the Dakshina Kannada District unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat.

Meenakshi further stated that missionaries also contributed to Kannada literary field by publishing literary works as it were they who introduced printing technology in the state.

She also  said that  Tulu Padadanas too have been translated by German missionaries.

Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, District Kannada Sahitya Parishat President presided over the function which was earlier inaugurated by Sr Jeswina, Vice Principal of St Agnes College.
