Several Congress leaders of the district including DK District in-charge Minister B Ramanatha Rai,  State Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader, Mangaluru North MLA Moidin Bava and others were in Jeddah recently  to inaugurate the NRI  wing of the party in Saudi Arabia and  also to address a convention of NRIs hailing from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Over 3000 NRIs attended the convention inaugurated by Minister UT Khader. The convention  gains significance mainly owing to the fact that in the past nearly 35 per cent NRIs refrained from the polling exercise. As per an estimate there are nearly one lakh  people from the coastal districts in the Gulf. Of them the maximum are from Ullal, Bantwal, and Suratkal and Kaup constituencies.

The NRI wing  of the Congress has come into being at Taif and Jeddah.
