Addressing members in front of the district office here, the former Minister B. Ramanath Rai said hundreds lost homes and other properties including standing crops.

Erstwhile governments, including the recent Congress-JDS coalition government, had immediately responded to such calamities and paid compensation to the victims. The coalition government had even announced a special package for Kodagu last year, he said.

Mr. Rai chided Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa for not providing any compensation. While Mr. Yediyurappa had announced he would meet Mr. Modi during his visit to Bengaluru recently seeking relief package, nothing of that sort happened and instead the Prime Minister flew to Haryana for poll campaign.

During the BJP regime in the State, the then Prime Minster Manmohan Singh had done an aerial survey of floods and the UPA government had immediately released compensation.

BJP is only concerned about strengthening its numbers in the State and cares little for people, Mr. Rai lamented.

The Central team did not visit Dakshina Kannada during its recent visit to the state to assess flood damage and this shows the inability of BJP legislators, he alleged.
