Mangaluru,June 2,2015: District Vice President of SDPI AM Athavulla has alleged that the Congress which was facing fears of defeat at the hands of SDPI supported candidates had assaulted them during the Gram Panchayat elections.
Speaking to reporters here, he alleged SDPI activists were attacked at various places by the Congress workers and added such sort of behaviour was unbecoming of a party like the Congress.
Charging Congress workers of violating poll code of conduct at Ariadka in Puttur, he said the SDPI men were attacked when he complained against this with the returning officer.
Continuing, he said in Thumbay Panchayat the Congress made use of a dispute between two brothers, one of whom was affiliated to the SDPI and another to the Congress.”The Congress workers assaulted women and children in the house of SDPI worker and then lodged complaint against SDPI activists by giving a political colour to a family dispute,” he alleged.
The Congress workers even tried to assault SDPI workers during campaigning in Jokatte as they could not tolerate the good works done by its president who is from the SDPI, Athavulla said
Continuing, he also feared that the Congress workers may create disturbance even during the counting of votes on June 5 and requested the police to ensure adequate security arrangements,.
Another allegation made by him was that Hemanath Shetty, former Puttur Block Congress President had threatened SDPI worker whose brother was contesting as a Congress supported candidate.
SDPI office bearers Nawazulla, Anwar Sadath and Alphonso Franco were present at the press meet.
