Mangaluru, May 19, 2020: A review committee of the District Congress led by MCC Opposition leader Abdul Ravoof which was formed to look into the losses incurred by fruit and vegetable vendors at APMC yard due to Monday’s rains, has estimated the loss at Rs 50 lakhs and has demanded that the district administration should itself bear the losses. The Committee visited the APMC yard and interacted with the merchants.
Speaking to reporters later, Abdul Ravoof said the district administration has failed to provide basic amenities to the merchants at the APMC yard resulting in Monday’s losses during rains. The APMC Yard constructed around 30 years ago does not have drinking water arrangements nor electricity connection. The yard also has no proper lavatories. All these problems have forced merchants to undertake business under tarpaulin sheets, he said.
He said the MCC which shifted the merchants from the Central Market on the grounds that it was not possible to maintain social distancing during Covid-19 times, has failed in its responsibility of providing essential facilities at the APMC yard.
Corporators Naveen D’Souza, Shashidhar Hegde, Praveenchandra Alva were also present.
