Concern on children’s rights raised at Grama Soudha at Talapady

Mangaluru, Dec 31 2017: A girl student complained that a gang of boys have been making indecent gestures and demanding her phone number near K C Road when she returns from her school in Talapady.  She spoke during the special Gram Sabha on children’s rights at Grama Soudha in Talapady on Dec 29, Friday.

After the incident she is terrified of leaving her home, she said and urged the local panchayat and the department officials concerned to take necessary measures towards providing a safer environment for girl students.  Talapady gram panchayat president Suresh Alva assured of initiating legal measures.

Another student from Government High School, Patna in Talapady shared a problem experienced by her classmate. The student is not able to come to school due to poverty. The student’s family should be provided help, she said. The school headmistress said that even though the school management tried to convince the parents of the student, they are reluctant to send her. She meanwhile requested the panchayat to look into the matter.

A student from Patna school complained that lorries are being parked near Talapady check-post in a haphazard manner. Also, the vehicles move at breakneck speeds even at zebra crossings due to which the students are finding it very difficult to cross the road.

GP President said that the police department will be requested to deploy additional police staff on the road.

Students said that the irregularity in bus timings have caused a huge inconvenience to students of Durgaparameshwari School, Talapady.

Students addressed the issues of shortage of teaching staff and the lack of a playground.

Patna gram panchayat president Suresh Alva said that there is lack of space in Government High School, Patna, Talapady. A proposal has been made towards building a government college and high school at 3.5 acres of land in Narlapadil, he added.

Childline city coordinator Yogish Malligemadu said that parents and teachers should treat girl and boys equally. Corporal punishment is not the way to mend children’s bad behaviour. Instead, they should be given counselling. Even boys are assaulted sexually. But these cases are not reported, he pointed out. The children’s protection committee in the panchayats needs to be more active, he added.

Talapady gram panchayat vice president Jayalakshmi, children’s representatives Muhammed Rifaz and Ananya Kulal, panchayat development officer Keshava, Government High School, Patna School Development and Monitoring Committee president Abdul Rahman, health officer Gopi Prakash, Government High School, Patna headmistress Sharmila Ucchil and GP members were present.
