Completing Shiradi Ghat road a vertual miracle

Mangaluru, July 27, 2015: Developing Shiradi Ghat stretch of National Highway 48, from Heggadde to Kempule (13 km) was not a easy task for the government. Even the experts in road construction had opined that developing this road is one of the toughest task as the area receives an average rainfall of 5,000 mm per year.

However, Ocean Construction (India) Private Limited of Mangaluru which completed the work of concretisation on April 20 has almost finished the work. Inspite of 21 days of rain in April and five days of rain in May, the company succeeded in finishing the work within given time. The road shouldering, fencing works, installation of sign boards would finish within 10 days, said the company Director Inayat Ali.  

Machinaries worth Rs 40 crore have been used for the work. Around 400 labourers and 150 drivers and supervisors have worked day and night to finish it in time. To work at night four lights of 1,000 watts were used. Slip Form concrete paving provess is used to fill concrete so that slurry of concrete can also be utilized. The company used 40 tippers, 12 escavators, five bulldozers, five Slip Form pavers, eight transit pavers etc. There was a plant with a capacity of 10,000 bag concrete mixing plant. Around four lakh bags of cement, 50,000 cubic metrs of Jalli, 30,000 cubic metres of sand and 800 tonnes of steal, 50,000 cubic metres of GSB has been used.  

Tunnel Project   : Minister Mahadevappa said team of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Tunnel Road project on Shiradi Ghat within four months. The 21.5km tunnel road between Marnahalli and Kempuhole will be constructed by JICA. Meanwhile, he said,  NHAI - National Highway Authority of India  will commence the four laning work on Mangaluru - Bengaluru road in December 2015.
