Commission’s report on home stay attack is irrelevant – former DGP

Mangalore, Aug 11, 2012 : F. T. R. Colaco, retired director general of police (Karnataka), said that Karntaka Women’s Commission Chairperson C. Manjula’s report on the home stay attack should be discarded as irrelevant and that a new chairperson who really cares about the welfare of women must be appointed in place of C. Manjula.

The former DGP was interacting with students at a discussion on Moral Policing – Blot on Indian Democracy held at St. Aloysius College on August 10, Friday. He said that he was horrified and disgusted to hear C. Manjula’s statement, adding that her report is totally prejudiced and biased and indicates that she is totally under the control of her political bosses. She now has to answer if she is interested in the welfare of women or in the ruling political party, he said.

He also demanded to know how the chairperson can accuse the young people of drug abuse when the police have clearly stated that no drugs were found in the venue. Even the excise department has confirmed that the liquor used in the party was within the accepted limits, he said.

Condemning the home stay attack, he held the ruling party responsible for all the disturbances in the district. Accusing the ruling party of trying to divide society on the basis of religion and culture just to build their vote bank, he said that the social attitude on gender issues is moving in the wrong direction.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr. Swebert D’Silva, principal of St. Aloysius College, condemned the attack and said that the group that molested young girls does not know what culture is.

The discussion was jointly organized by the Catholic Association of South Canara (CASC) and St. Aloysius College. A resolution was passed condemning the commission’s report and the home stay attack.
