Coast Guard DIG inaugurates seminar on ’High Intensity Drug Trafficking’ at MIA

Mangaluru, Feb 27, 2020: DIG S.B. Venkatesh, Commander, Coast Guard-Karnataka inaugurated the seminar on ’High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Investigation’ at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) on Wednesday 26th February, 2020. The seminar was jointly conducted by CISF Airport Security Group and Centre for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (CNPS), MAHE for officials of all departments working in the airport.

The DIG observed the alarming growth in drug consumption across the country and the increasing trafficking to meet the growing consumption. He dwelt on the challenges faced on the seas in apprehending drug smugglers.

Earlier welcoming the gathering Deputy Commandant CISF Amit Kumar lauded the knowledge partnership with CNPS for conducting the program. He disclosed that it was a first of its kind among all the airports in India, and participation by Customs, Immigration, Airlines, State Police, vastly enhanced the effectiveness of the program.

Speaking on behalf of MAHE, Pro Chancellor Dr. H.S. Ballal pointed out that drug trafficking was one of the main issues that came up for talks between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. He also stated that setting up of the CNPS was a unique initiative by MAHE and it is the only university among 800 odd universities in India to have such a set up.

Dr. G. Shreekumar Menon, former Director General of the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN) and Head of CNPS delivered the keynote address on the need for inter-agency cooperation to tackle the menace of drug trafficking going unabated on International borders and educational hubs in the country.

Dr. Ashwini Kumar spoke about various facets of drug consumption and the latest drugs in circulation in the market. Dr. Nirmal Krishnan Assistant Professor delivered a detailed talk on body concealment by traffickers.
