Cloth bags to students from Mangalore Corporation, MCC

Mangaluru, July 23, 2016: With the motivation of school students to create awareness about the use of plastic carry bags, the MCC Mangaluru City Corporation launched a drive to distribute free cloth bags to them on July 22, Friday.

MCCMayor Harinath launched the drive at government primary and high schools at Marakada. The corporation distributed 350 cloth bags to primary, higher primary, high school and anganwadi students.

The mayor said that the corporation was planning to distribute one lakh cloth bags for free this year. Of them, 15,000 bags would be distributed in the first phase, mainly among students.  Last month, the civic body distributed 500 cloth bags to all its employees.   The Mayor said that the civic body was using students as they could create awareness easily at homes. The corporation could reach many people to convince them to stop using plastic carry bags.

Addressing students at Marakada, the Mayor said that used plastic carry bags finally find their way to the compost plant at Pachchanady where their separation is a huge problem. The corporation was finding it difficult to produce quality compost due to the mix of plastic carry bags.

Choked drains  : Plastic carry bags thrown on roadside had been choking storm water drains and sewage carrying lines. Students should convince their parents not to use plastic carry bags and other banned plastic products anymore.  Mayor Harinath said if plastic was burnt on roadside it gave scope for diseases, including cancer.

The Mayor asked students to take lead in their homes to segregate waste as dry and wet. The corporation would soon collect segregated waste from door steps.

Can be the Topper :  The Mayor said that the corporation could make it to the top among 500 cities and towns in a cleanliness survey to be carried out by the Union government next year. Students and parents should cooperate in keeping the city and their own premises clean.

Madhu S. Manohar, Environment Engineer at the corporation, said that the corporation would distribute cloth bags in at least two schools every week.  Kavitha Sanil, chairperson, Standing Committee for Health, Education and Social Justice, Muhammaed K, councillor were present.
