Mangaluru, Oct 09, 2018: DK District  In-charge Minister U T Khader has challenged BJP leaders to write to the Central government’s Urban Development Ministry to drop the project to upgrade the slaughterhouse in the city from the Smart City programme.

Khader.jAddressing media at the Circuit House on October 8, Monday, Minister Khader said that he had given suggestions for the upgrade of the only government-run slaughterhouse situated in Kudroli to maintain cleanliness for good health and stem pollution.

“During the Smart City state advisory committee meeting, I had recommended a modern slaughterhouse in order to manage solid waste at source. The proposal, including a recommendation for a modern slaughterhouse, was sent to the Ministry of Urban Development of the Central government for approval,” said Khader.

There were also proposals to upgrade Wenlock Hospital, Mangala Stadium, City Market, Pumpwell bus terminal and a football ground, he said.

Khader also said, “None of the BJP leaders in the committee had opposed the idea when it was put forth. Now, however, when the proposal has already been forwarded to the Central government, they have started issuing statements.”

Explaining the idea of the proposed state-of-the-art slaughterhouse, the district in-charge minister said, “In most cases, the waste produced at the meat shops and the poultry farms is disposed of unscientifically by dumping it in water bodies. To prevent this, it was proposed as a part of the Smart City project, to have a system to process the meat at the slaughterhouse itself.”

Accusing the MP and MLAs of blowing the issue out of proportion, Khader reminded that a BJP leader himself used to run a slaughterhouse.

He said that he was not in support of illegal transport and slaughter of cows. The officials would work to curb the illegal transport of cattle.

He said he had spoken to the SP on the issue.
