City police reassure members of SC/STs

Mangaluru, Aug 28,2017: City police top brass on August 27, Sunday assured members of SC/ST community that plaints regarding misuse of technology to harass individuals, spread rumors or create social ill will, will be dealt on top priority. Suitable instruction will be given to all station house officers (SHOs) to register case under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and even IPC as the case may be and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book, they maintained.

 

 

 

 

 

Taking note of concerns expressed by Girish Kumar, community leader at monthly SC/ST meeting on August 27, Sunday at perceived delay on part on women’s police station in investigating a case of a single woman being subjected to a barrage of vulgar messages, Hanumantharaya, DCP (law and order) advised him to bring any such grave lapses to the notice of senior officers. "This however is not an excuse for the SHOs to be lax in discharging their duties in the first place," he said.

When Girish persisted with his views that the victim Prabha (name changed) had been facing the trauma for the last three months and she was not getting the police to act against her perpetrator, Hanumantharaya reminded him that annually, an average of 5,000 cases are registered in city police Commissionerate and sincere efforts are made to investigate them. "Investigation into few cases may get delayed along the way and this is by no means intentional," he said.


When a member  of Dalit Rights Committee pointed that city police has a baggage of many unsolved cases pertaining to SC/ST, Hanumantharaya said department is reviewing all such cases for effective follow up. City police will also activate departmental mechanism that mandates periodic updates of the case to the complainants, he said adding officers of rank of DSP and above will personally supervise and review progress in cases registered under SC/ST Act
