City gets its Clock Tower back!

Mangaluru, Sep 20, 2019: This coastal city got back its clock tower on Friday. Four huge clocks with ultra-modern digital movements with illuminated dial and classical numbering and hands arrived at the newly built clock tower site in front of the Townhall. In the next couple of days, all of them will start ticking and become a part of the history of this vibrant city.
The clocks devised and fabricated by the family of the master horologer Ms.Nayaks and co., which has had been producing clocks for all occasions since 1939. The city had no clock tower of its own since the old clock tower was brought down more than 15 years back.
But this coastal city has given a big push to the revival of the clock towers and if things go as planned all the 110 cities touted to be smart cities under Prime Minister Modi’s smart city scheme, will get each a clock tower that will enhance the cultural beauty of the towns and cities.
The traditional horologers of Mangaluru Nayaks clocks have now designed that will not just add to the beauty of the clock towers but also be functionally perfect models. “First of the models is ready to be hoisted on top of the artistic clock tower coming up in Mangaluru, this tower has been under construction and on all four sides, there will be clocks. Each of them can be seen at a distance of over 750 meters clearly. Thanks to former deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada A B Ibrahim, he saw the cultural angle that a clock tower bestows on a city and encouraged us in making this clock for the upcoming tower. The Roman letters, the long black handles the extremely precise and long-lasting mechanism was the key to keep these clocks ticking for a long time. The dial is backlit with Light Emitting Diodes enhances the beauty of the tower” says Sathishchandra Nayak the traditional horloger. His family had been in the business or rather a passion of timekeeping since 1939, coming from the venerable Vaman Nayak who began it all that year.
