City art lovers admire US students work

Mangaluru, Mar 21, 2018: ‘Paramparik,’ an exhibition of Indian traditional paintings, organised at St Aloysius College a unique way that the 12 paintings were created by the students of Cortland College, USA, under the ‘Study Abroad and Exchange Programme’.

St Aloysius College art teacher John Chandran said that the artworks which featured various styles of painting such as Mysuru, Mughal, Rajasthani, Khangra, Madhubani and Worli, were learnt by the students in a limited period. The paintings were done on poster colour on paper medium.

St Aloysius College Registrar Dr A M Narahari said that the students will be awarded credit points based on their performance. Under the student exchange programme, they take up several subjects for training and also undergo an internship. Their inquisitiveness for knowledge is laudable, he added.

Student Claire Bogart, who had exhibited her artworks, said she drew paintings on Lord Krishna. Almost all the paintings were mythological. Indian art comprises of intricate designs and many colours. She enjoyed doing the art works and she would carry her works back to New York. Creating art works was a great relief for her and she enjoyed doing them.

Asha Goldberg, who is from Florida, said she always had an inclination towards Indian art. The Indian traditional artworks are very precise, she said. The various styles of painting depict the diversity of Indian art. Her teacher John Chandran trained her in Indian art and introduced various styles of traditional Indian painting.

Another student Brooke Weinstein, also from US, said she had learnt the basics of art at her eighth grade and it helped her in depicting the colours in a meaningful way. With the exhibition, she got an exposure for her artworks, which is a good experience. She likes Khangra paintings for their intricacy and detail.

St Aloysius College Principal Fr Pravin Martis inaugurated the exhibition. St Aloysius High School Headmaster Fr Gerald Furtado was present.
