City Police arrests two gangs of thieves and one more accused in Deralakatte blackmail case

Mangaluru, Dec 8, 2015: City police today claimed to have arrested two gangs of thieves and one more accused in kidnapping and blackmail of two students of a private college at Deralakatte.

Safhan Hussein (31) who is involved in 20 cases including Deralakatte kidnap and rape case, has been booked under the Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, [Immoral Traffic Offenders, Slum-Grabbers and Video or Audio Pirates] Act.

City police commissioner S Murugan told reporters that a decision to book Safhan under Goonda Act was taken on November 21. The state government after going through the proposal has given its nod to proceed with Goonda Act provisions against Safan on November 27.

The police had already arrested a gang of eight in the case, and were looking for Safwan for long. "Safhan is a habitual offender and a rowdy element involved in 20 cases. Cases against him includes, robbery, murder, attempt to murder, rioting, rape, dacoit and assault on policemen reported between 2005 and 2015," Murugan said adding that Safhan is now lodged in Central Jail at Ballary.

In another case, five persons were arrested by Pandeshwar police in connection with a series of thefts in various police stations in and around Mangaluru. The arrested are Haris alias Chandru (24), Mohammed Shabeer (24), Altaf (24), Umar Farooq (20), Mohammed Rafiq (29).

Surathkal police also arrested a gang of four thieves involved in Kana theft case. The arrested are Afreed (19), Shakeef Hussain (19), Naufal Hakeeb (19) and Mohammed Rashid (19). On November 19, they had stolen Rs 1,35,000 from a house at Kana in which a family was staying on rent. Four mobile phones and watches were recovered from the accused, the commissoner said.
