Mangaluru, Apr 30, 2015: Cardinal George Alancherry, Major Arch Bishop of Syro-Malabar Church who was accorded a warm welcome at the St Alphonsa Forane Catholic Church at Kankanady in Mangaluru on April 30, Thursday has said that his visit to the region aimed at expressing solidarity with not only Catholics but all people of the region.
Speaking to reporters after being greeted by Mangaluru Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Cardinal Alancherry said the Church which has actively involved itself in educational social and charitable activities was serving the society irrespective of the faith of the people.
He said he will be visiting Belthangady Diocese which is in the 16th year of its existence in his capacity as Major Arch Bishop. Describing the visit as an apostolic endeavour, Cardinal George Alancherry said the visit will also help in infusing new spirit in the minds and hearts of the faithful. Stating that he will have many opportunities during his visit to celebrate the Holy Eucharist, Cardinal Alancherry said on every such occasion he would pray for the well being of one and all.
He also stated that his visit will help him interact with the parish priests, sisters, heads of different divisions of the Diocese as well as the laity. The visit also aims at motivating all those involved with the Diocese and give an insight into the functioning of the Belthangady Diocese, he added.
Bishop of Belthangady Mar Lawrence Mukkuzhy, Fr Joseph Valiaparambil, MLA JR Lobo, MLC Ivan D’Souza were also present.
