Christmas celebrated with great devotion in Mangalore

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Dec 25, 2011: The midnight of Dec 24, which is the eve of Christmas, is very holy for Christians worldwide as they believe that Jesus Christ was born at midnight.

A few years ago, the celebrations in churches used to commence at 11:30 p.m. with carol singing followed by a festive mass at 12:00 midnight. Later, churches changed the timings to 7:30 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. for security purposes. Today, mass is held in churches all over Mangalore any time between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Since the churches are packed with the faithful, hardly anybody feels the cold weather.

Today, the church bells rang and carols were sung in churches across the diocese of Mangalore. The city sparkled with electric lights, brilliantly lit stars, decorated Christmas trees, cribs, and others.
