Chess in all schools of the State next academic year

Ujire, Oct  8, 2014: Minister for Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fisheries K Abhayachandra Jain stated a process is to be  initiated to include chess in all schools of the State, right from the primary level and a discussion will be held in this regard with Minister for Primary Education Kimmane Rathnakar.


Abhayachandra jainHe was presiding over the inaugural function of the Lawyer’s Cup International Chess Tournament held as a part of the golden jubilee celebrations of Belthangady court on October 7.  Congratulating Poovamma who fetched gold in 400 meters relay in Asian Games and Vikas Gowda who fetched silver in shotput, Jain said that a gymnasium will be opened by the State government in SDM College, Ujire.  The minister meanwhile assured of providing more encouragement to the sportspersons of Karnataka.

Inaugurating the chess tourney, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade said that the chess demands very expense and facilities. Concentration and confidence could be boosted by playing the game, he said and added that the mention of the game is made in mythological events and today, it has been acclaimed as an international game. Dr Heggade called upon the students to hone their intellectual skills by  involving themselves in the game of chess.

He added that encouragement and assistance will be given by Shanthivana Trust to schools to include chess from the next academic year.  MLA K Vasantha Bangera, State Bar Council Vice President Ravindranatha Rai, senior advocate Nemiraja Shetty, Prof NJ Kadamba, Belthangadi Bar Association President Shashikiran Jain among others were present on the occasion.    International Chess player Pravin Thipse was felicitated.
