Check-posts scrapped post GST, goods vehicles speed on

Mangaluru, July 2, 2017: With 21 check-posts shut down in the wake of GST in the state, trucks entering the State the borders had free passage on July 1, Saturday. As a precursor to the GST rollout, the Commercial Taxes Department had abolished check-posts created to verify tax documents of trucks.

At one of the busiest entry points into the State, particularly for trucks coming from Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala, trucks rolled by without stopping.

As if out of habit, a few trucks stopped at the check-post, before being asked by inspectors to proceed.

“The tax collection check-post has been closed since midnight. All goods vehicles have been allowed to pass without stopping. The whole process has been extremely smooth,” said a Motor Vehicle Inspector.

At Mangaluru, officials stood outside check-posts and directed trucks to pass through.

There was little reprieve for the staff though. C. Manjunath, commercial tax officer. Attibele, said staff had to deal with documents that were stored within the check-posts. Officials had said the check-post staff will be deputed to other divisions, including auditing.

G.R. Shanmugappa, general secretary of South India Motor Transport Association, said. “In Karnataka, tax personnel continue to stand outside check-posts and we are getting reports of truckers being harassed, unlike TN and Kerala”.
