Mangaluru, Jan 12, 2015:  The State government has released Rs. 50 lakh for the immediate repair of the Charmadi Ghat, which is bearing the brunt of a heavy vehicle flow after the closure of the Shiradi Ghat, said Chikkamagaluru district in-charge Minister K. Abhayachandra Jain.

Mr. Jain told presspersons on Saturday, after an inspection of the Charmadi Ghat along with Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai and officials of both the districts, that the Ghat road would temporarily be widened to accommodate the heavy traffic through the grant. He also said that the Minister for Public Works H.C. Mahadevappa would visit the Ghat within a week.

The Minister, following public demand, said the administration would also submit a proposal to the government to improve the Shishila-Byrapura Ghat and the Bisile Ghat, both connecting the coast and the hinterlands.

Mr. Jain said the blame for traffic jams on the Charmadi Ghat should lie with officials who did not carry out any improvement before letting in traffic.

Stating that the State government had to approve the Shishila-Byrapura Ghat road improvement, Mudigere MLA B.B. Ningaiah said the work required over Rs. 50 crore and the use of over 80 acres of forest land.

The improvement of the Didupe-Samse Ghat road would also reduce the burden on the Charmadi Ghat, he said.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim told The Hindu that the administration would issue a notification restricting the speed of vehicles to 40 kmph even as huge mirrors would be placed at some of the sharp curves of the Charmadi Ghat. Toilet and water facilities would also be made available. After the temporary improvement of the Ghat, the administration would consider allowing goods vehicles transporting vegetables and LPG cylinders on the Ghat stretch, he added.

His Chikkamagaluru counterpart Shekarappa, Superintendents of Police of both the districts S. Sharanappa and Sanjeev M. Patil and other officials were present.
