Change in Udupi’s traffic system in February

Mangaluru, Jan 13, 2015: To end traffic snarls and to facilitate the systematic movement of vehicles, a new traffic regulation system is expected to be in place in Udupi in the first week of February.

udupi There are signal lights in 10 places in Udupi — Sharada Mantapa, Kalsanka, Shiribeedu Junction, Karavali Junction, Hanuman Circle, Diana Circle, Lions Circle, Jodu Katte, Kinimulki and Ambalpady — and in three places in Manipal — MIT, Tiger Circle and Syndicate Circle.

However signal lights are operating only in two places — Karavali Junction and Diana Circle and only blinkers work in the rest of the areas.

There is heavy vehicular movement in some areas such as Shiribeedu-City Bus Stand area during the evenings resulting in traffic jams.

According to Mahadeva Diddimane, Traffic Sub Inspector, instances of speeding, reckless driving and the use of high beam lights on vehicles were high on the Udupi-Manipal Road in December.

“We collected fines totalling Rs. 4.39 lakh for these violations on the Udupi-Manipal Road. Fines for speeding and reckless driving account for about Rs. 1.5 lakh,” he said.

The lights, installed about five years ago, are in bad shape and they are being given a fresh coat of paint and their wiring is also being changed, he added.

According to the Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai, the Police Department has sought the services of a traffic management team from Bengaluru to study the traffic system in the city.

Based on the recommendations of the team, the police intend to take up measures for the smooth regulation of traffic in the city and activating signal lights whereever necessary.

Pedestrians also face problems, such as few zebra crossings, narrow roads, few parking spaces and encroachment on footpaths, on the roads.
