Those arrested on charges of cattle smuggling are Honnappa Gowda (55) of Belalu who was the vehicle driver and Usman (60) of Mogru village. Those arrested for assaulting the duo are Santosh Poojary (30) of Bandaru, Dhanaraj (21), Latish (20)  and Sharath  (19) of Kaniyoor. All four are said to be activists of a Hindu organisation.

It is alleged that activists of a Hindu organisation had intercepted a vehicle at Mogru Junction on Thursday night alleging cattle was being transported to slaughter houses illegally. The police who immediately rushed to the spot had arrested the cattle transporters as well as the assaulters. This infuriated the Hindu organisations with over 200 activists gathering  in front of the Uppinangady police station late night.  The police were unrelenting despite pressure from Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja and others against registering a case.

Later all the four were released on bail.
