Canara school’s skating champ, set to make international debut

Mangaluru, Feb 04, 2017: Reports state that  9 year-old Muhammad Shamil Arshad from the  city, a national roller skating champion, is all set to showcase his skill at the international level. A class four student of Canara CBSE School in the city, Shamil started practising roller skating at the age of three and succeeded in bagging state-level gold medal at the age of five.

Shamil has already bagged 69 medals at the district, state and national levels with his six years of practice. Recently, he bagged three gold medals and an individual championship under 8-10 years age group at the RSFI National Championship - 54th National Speed Skating Championship 2016-17 held in Bengaluru from January 18 to 23. The event saw participation of 45 students from 26 states.

Son of Arshad Hussain M S and Ramlath Arshad, Shamil had bagged his first gold medal at a state level roller skating championship held in Belagavi in November 2012. As many as 53 participants had taken part in the competition. Later, he won two gold medals and an individual championship at a state-level event held in Bengaluru in November 2013. The meet was attended by 53 participants.

His medal tally includes six national medals (including three gold, one silver and two bronze), six medals at the South zone CBSE meets (including three gold, two silver and a bronze), 12 gold at state level, 13 district level medals and 13 medals at inter school competitions. Shamil has bagged 14 individual championships at various events.
