Call for suo motu raids to unearth prostitution rackets: Nagalakshmi Bai

Mangaluru, Sep 26, 2017 : State Women’s Commission Chairperson Nagalakshmi Bai on Monday asked the police to conduct suo motu raids to unearth prostitution rackets in the city.

She was chairing a review meeting on measures taken to prevent atrocities on women at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here.

Speaking at the meeting, Hilda Rayappan, Director of Prajna Counselling Centre, Mangaluru, said prostitution was taking place in many apartment complexes in the city.

Ms. Rayappan got to know this from a sex worker who was the victim of the racket and escaped from the same. She said even young women aged 20 are falling prey to the racket through women brokers and this should be curtailed.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Hanumantharaya said police have been conducting raids and booking cases whenever they get suspicion. The special central crime branch police wing has conducted raids on massage centres too. Such raids would continue, including on apartment complexes where suspected rackets exist, he said.

Meanwhile, Ms. Bai asked the district health officer to arrange for the services of doctors and provide toilet facility at Puttur Government Hospital.

DHO Ramakrishna Rao said tender has been finalised for constructing a toilet block at a cost of Rs. 35 lakh and assured that doctors from neighbouring taluk hospitals would be asked to work on rotation basis at Puttur. Superintendent of Police C.H. Sudheer Kumar Reddy, Commission Member Dhanalakshmi, and others were present on the occasion.
