Mangaluru, Aug 11, 2016: In a media release, CPI, Communist Party of India (Marxist) will lay siege to the office of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) near Nehru Maidan in the city on August 12, protesting the latter’s demand to pay an additional security deposit from consumers.

cpi CPI (M) Mangaluru City South secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said successive governments have made the life of the common man miserable by regularly increasing energy charges.   On the other hand, governments are also trying to eliminate BPL ration cards instead of strengthening the public distribution system.

Additional deposit : MESCOM has also been demanding that consumers pay an additional security deposit, ranging from Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 3,000, secretary Bajal said.   The demand has come as a shock for consumers, particularly those from economically weaker sections. MESCOM officials would not answer queries in this regard, he said.

Secretary Bajal recalled that the company had resorted to this tactic five years ago and had to withdraw the move following stiff resistance from consumers and organisations.

He said the additional security deposit collection move is nothing but daylight robbery and should be stopped.  The CPI (M) has decided to hold a big protest and lay siege to MESCOM office at 10 a.m. tomorrow Aug 12, Friday;  after a rally from Mini Vidhana Soudha, he said.
