COMEDK, students from outside majority, undecided

Mangaluru, May 7, 2016: The Supreme Court order, which ruled out the conduct of entrance exams by private colleges and associations, came too close to the Undergraduate Entrance Test (UGET). 

A majority of the 1.79 lakh students who have registered for the UGET, conducted by the COMEDK, are medical and dental seat aspirants (1.01 lakh). Many of them are from other States; only 30,550 students are from Karnataka.

The apex court order on Friday stated that “… no examination shall be permitted to be held for admission to MBBS or BDS studies by any private college or association or any private/deemed university,” leading to the cancellation of the test for 700 seats each for medical and dental seats in 12 medical and 19 dental colleges.  With this, Sunday’s exam will hold good only for the 18,000 engineering seats in 161 engineering colleges.


Though COMEDK-UGET for medical and dental admissions has been cancelled, deemed universities, which are conducting entrance tests independently, are undecided.

H.S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor of Manipal University, said the Manipal University Online Entrance Test for professional courses would be held as scheduled, as it covers other courses as well. “It is up to students to decide whether to appear for the exam,” he said.

Around 40,000 students had registered for the test, which will conclude on May 21. “But we might file a review petition in the Supreme Court on this issue,” he said.
