CFI’s drive against drug addiction launched in Udupi

Mangaluru, Oct 09, 2016: A two-month campaign against drug addiction being organised by the student organisation, CFI, Campus Front of India at Udupi, launched with a rally from Clock Tower to Sri Narayanaguru Sabha Bhavan here on Thursday. Students turned up in large numbers to participate in the march. In a bid to wean youngsters off drugs, the campaign will present short films, street plays, besides organizing seminars and distributing brochures.

Highlighting the dangers of drug addiction, president of CFI Udupi, Muhammad Shafiq said, "It is an effort by the students to question the gravity of drug addiction, especially among youth. Creating awareness through campus programmers is the best solution to this problem. The Karnataka state committee of CFI is organizing two campaigns against drug addiction across the state."

The campaign is also looking at instilling a sense of responsibility among youths and making them aware of the need to contribute to the development of the country. "Youth who are healthy can create a healthy nation. The campaign is also an initiative against violations of human rights, particularly in the areas of health, education, employment and safety," Shafiq added.

Psychiatrist Dr Virupaksha Devaramane said, "Students don’t like to seek help at rehab centers, which could help them get rid of addiction. Though there are de-addiction centers in Udupi, teenagers are hesitant to use this facility. Hence, awareness campaigns by students goes a long way. A forum that will help addicts develop their skills, and consequently increase their self-esteem. ."

The spurt in suicide cases, related to drug addiction in the state reflects the gravity of the issue. "The goal of the campaign is to create awareness among youngsters against drug addiction is inspiring," Dr Devaramane added
