CAA protest: ‘Submit videos, CCTV footage on firing’

Mangaluru, Feb 07, 2020:  Udupi Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh, who is conducting the magisterial inquiry into the December 19 firing in which two persons died, on Thursday urged people to submit copies of videos and CCTV footage of the firing to him on February 13.

 

Mr. Jagadeesh issued a public notice following a direction from the High Court of Karnataka on February 4 in a public interest litigation petition filed by freedom fighter H.S. Doreswamy and the former Mangaluru Mayor K. Ashraf.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Jagadeesh said that people and media persons should submit copies of videos and CCTV footage of the firing to him during the inquiry proceedings to be held at the court hall of the Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner on at 11 a.m. on February 13. Police Commissioner P.S. Harsha has been asked to submit copies of the videos and CCTV footage in the possession of the police on the same day.

The High Court has directed him to make use of these videos for his inquiry, he said.

75 depose

Earlier, 75 persons appeared and deposed before Mr. Jagadeesh.

A total of 201 people, including family members of Jaleel and Nousheen who died in the police firing, have deposed during the five sittings held so far. Eight persons, who could not depose on Thursday, were asked to appear on February 13. Another date will be given for the police to make their submissions, he said.

Among those who deposed on Thursday included a fruit vendor from Central Market who accused a group of 40 people, which included a few shop owners, of targeting Muslim shops on December 19. The group, which held machetes and wooden logs, ransacked the shops of Muslims and went away with cash from there. Despite a complaint by Rizwan, the police failed to take any action, he said.

Khatija and Ramzat, relatives of the deceased Jaleel, also filed their statements on the situation on December 19 near Jaleel’s house and at Highland Hospital where his body was kept.

Among others who deposed included B. Shivaprasad, a document writer, who said that he witnessed violent action from the protestors leading to the police lathicharge and later the firing.
