Bishop releases informative post centenary silver jubilee brochure

Mangalore, August 29, 2011: Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore Diocese, released a brochure highlighting various projects planned to mark the post centenary silver jubilee of the Mangalore Diocese, at a press conference held at Bishop’s House, Kodialbail on Aug 29, Monday.

The jubilee is being celebrated in a bid to “bring happiness and joy into the life of the deprived and the less privileged.” All the projects planned give top priority to the welfare of the poor and the under privileged.

Some of these projects are the construction of over 160 houses for the poor,  construction of two hostels for poor students from rural areas, free education for poor students up to PUC, establishment of a museum at Rosario Cathedral on the Blessed Virgin Mary and the origin and development of the diocese during the past 125 years of its existence, a quiz on the history and development of the diocese in 12 series to be published in Rakknno, and a souvenir containing the history of the diocese and information regarding all 160 parishes in the diocese. The total cost of these projects is estimated to be Rs. 8 crore.

The chief project is that of constructing 160 houses for the poor—one in each parish. The bishop laid the foundation stone for the first house on July 24, 2011 at Kelarai Parish. Revealing more information regarding this project, the bishop said that houses will be given to the families that need them the most irrespective of religion. The diocese has also given away relief funds of Rs. 1.75 crore for people suffering from cancer, kidney-related, and heart disorders.

A jubilee committee with sub committees has already been formed to ensure the success of the post centenary silver jubilee celebrations.

Msgr. Denis Prabhu, the vice general of the diocese; Sushil Noronha, the secretary of the jubilee committee; Marcel Monteiro, the PRO of the diocese; Fr. Henry Sequeira, Fr. Onil D’Souza, and Fr. J. B. Crasta, the coordinators of the sub committees, were also present.
